Everything You Wanted to Know About Subroutines

(But Were Afraid to Ask)

Q: What is a subroutine anyway?

A: A subroutine is a set of timed events in the Smartcaster that are preprogrammed to fit into any hour.

Q: Huh?

A: Okay, say that you're punching in your timed events, & you notice that most of them are the same. You play a legal ID, then you switch the RIDZ to a certain channel to play the news, then fire a break, & finally you go back to music. Wouldn't it be easier to group these commands into one event & do this once? That's when you need a subroutine.

Making a subroutine isn't that much different than adding any other timed event.

  1. From the timed events screen, just press F3 to add a subroutine. A dialog box appears to enter a name field. It's good to make it as specific as possible. For instance call the news switch "News Switch," not "Fred."
  2. Next, it asks for the time to begin the first command of the subroutine. This is a duration, or elapsed time like a stop watch would have, not an hourly time on the clock. Make the first time 00:00:00, so that this event will happen as the subroutine begins.
  3. Then, you get several options. This is where you put in the actual ingredients, just like you would do for normal timed events.
  4. Next, you add all the commands into the subroutine sequentially performing the many commands that are needed to make the switch.
  5. Lastly, you simply schedule the subroutine in the main timed events screen whenever you need that sequence of events to play.
