Setting Up A Temperature Probe On the Smartcaster

Always turn off your computer before installing new hardware!

  1. Verify that you have a Smartcaster software version of P6.05.02 or greater. Any version starting with an x (i.e. x7-06-13) is fine.
  2. Connect the serial cable to COM 1 (or COM 2) on the back of the Smartcaster.
  3. Connect the other end to the Temperature Probe.
  4. Connect the power supply cable if supplied.
  5. Turn on the Smartcaster.
  6. Select SETUP from the Main Menu.
  7. Now select MISC. SETUP
  8. Change Option 16 to a Y. If you later discover that the temperature that is read by the probe is off by a few degrees from your studio temperature display, you may return to this option and enter an offset number of up to + or - 9 degrees.
  9. Make sure that Option 17 is set to your preference.
  10. Exit MISC SETUP and then select OPTIONS SETUP.
  11. Set Option 15 to the COM port where the temperature probe is connected. (The one used in step #2 above).
  12. Exit OPTIONS Setup.
  13. Return to the Smartcaster Program.

When you first enter the Smartcaster you should see a pair of eyes under Announcer. These should disappear in 5 to 10 seconds and be replaced by the current temperature. If the "eyes" don't disappear, try exiting the Smartcaster and changing Option 15 in the OPTIONS SETUP to another COM port.

Recording Temp Checks:

Select F6 Record Time/Temp in the RECORD SCREEN. This works similar to recording time checks. As you record each cut the screen automatically increments to the next temperature and sets up the system to record. Once Temp Checks are recorded they are played back by inserting an ALT+E into the BREAKLOG Screen.

Known Bugs and Limitations:

If you roll above 59 while recording Temp Checks, the number jumps to 100 degrees. Stop the recording process and start it again at 60 degrees to get around this problem. Currently, you can not play a Temp Check instead of a function like you can with a Time Check.

Neither Temperature nor Time Checks contribute to the total length on a break when played back. This can cause timing problems when using automatic fill in satellite mode.

Using One Temperature Probe on Multiple Stations:

Generation 2000 Smartcasters Only:

  1. Follow the steps above for the Smartcaster that will actually have the Temperature Probe connected to it.
  2. In ESETUP, set Option 1 to Y.
  3. In PATH SETUP, set Option 18 to D:\Control. Then make sure to create that directory at the DOS prompt.

On the other systems that will share the Temperature Reading:

  1. In MISC. SETUP, set number 16 to Y or whatever offset is necessary.
  2. In ESETUP, set Option 1 to N.
  3. In PATH SETUP verify that Option 18 is set to D:\Control.

You may not have the eSetup screen available to you on the Main Menu. In this case you will need to get to a DOS prompt and type ESETUP then press the Enter key.
