Installing New Smartcaster Software

For Versions X100-201

Installing new software on the Smartcaster is simple & relatively painless if you follow the steps. If at any point you are having trouble with the install, or something goes wrong, please call the Smartcaster support line for assistance.

Before You Begin

Before you begin the install process, you need to check a couple of things to make sure that your system can use the new software.

  1. First, go to the about screen. It's located in the Quit menu. On the right hand side toward the top, it should say "Using Enhanced Directory Structures."
If it does not say that, or if you can't find the about screen, you probably should call the Support Line.
  2. The second thing that needs to be checked is the amount of memory in the unit. This is RAM; not the amount of space on the hard drives. Going to your record screen won't help you here. Go to the C prompt, & type "mem." This will show you the amount of memory your Smartcaster has. Ignore everything but the total memory. That number needs to be bigger then 8,000k. If not, then the new software will not run, & you need to call the support line first to find out what you need to do to install it.

The Install

  1. When you are ready to begin the install, start by exiting out to the C prompt.
  2. Then reboot the computer.
  3. If you are on a Lantastic network, it will ask you if the network should be loaded. If you aren't running a network ignore this step. The question will be located at the bottom of the screen, and will go by quickly, so be ready for it. Hitting N for no will unload the network, so other machines might have trouble playing spots.
  4. Don't load the actual Smartcaster Program. If the Smartcaster tells you it's going to auto load, hit a key to get to the main menu.
  5. Press the Escape key to exit to the command prompt.
  6. Put disk one of the install into the floppy drive.
  7. Type "A:" then press the ENTER key. This should give you the A prompt.
  8. Type the word "install" then press enter.
  9. A dialog box will appear asking you if you want to install to the directory listed, or choose another one. Press ENTER.
  10. It will ask you if it can create another directory. Press Y for yes.
  11. The installation program will continue, pausing after each disk. The machine will instruct you on putting the next disk into the machine, & pressing a key.
  12. After the forth disk completes, it'll go into an unpacking mode. You don't need to do anything at this point. After unpacking, you'll see a screen with some error messages saying "Directory does not exist." Ignore them. At the end of this screen, it'll ask you to press a key. Do so.
  13. Another screen will appear, giving you another message box, & asking you to press a key. Once again, press a key.
  14. The Setup Screens will flash one at a time, then the installation program will leave you at the Super Menu. Press Escape to get to the C prompt, then reboot the Smartcaster, & load the network if needed.
