VERIFICATION LOGS

One operator we talked to was surprised to learn that the Verification Logs could be transfered to a floppy disk.  As Support Technicians, we sometimes take it for granted that everyone else knows the basic elements of the

SMARTCASTER.  This incident reminds us to remind you to browse the Operator's manual.  There are lots of tidbits and important facts that will benefit anyone who spends a little time reading it.

CORRECTION

As a part of your preventative maintenance, you should be checking the fans on your SMARTCASTER on a weekly basis.  Proper airflow is essential to the operation of the unit.  Heat can cause the hard drives to shut down.  Proper airflow will keep that from happening.

I need to make a correction to last month's newsletter.  The change from the C5 satellite to GE8 was intended to be less traumatic than I was led to believe.  A simple switch over to the new satellite would have required a minimum of fuss and muss.  The next big concern is for stations who are still using

Sedat.  My sources tell me that ABC will turn off the Sedat satellite on May 31st.  If your station is using a Sedat card in a Scientific Atlanta or Fairchild receiver, you should contact you network provider for their replacement recommendation.  Again, there should be paperwork already on your desk

BE PREPARED

Now and then I get a total shock, usually because some station's experience is totally different from my radio experience.  Some stations do not have phones in their studios.  At least not within reach of the SMARTCASTER.  I didn't have a phone near my

transmitter, and had to run a 25-foot extension down the hall when I needed to work on it.  Now I realize that I ASSUME that the SMARTCASTER is in the studio where an announcer can use it, and I ASSUME that every studio has a phone for incoming messages, ballgames,

and reports.  The Support Staff helps with SMARCASTERS by using the phone.  It helps your staff if they don't have to run back and forth to the phone.  At least running a phone extension cord would help in these situations.
