You may have noticed a new look in the newsletter. The new format is to make it more interesting to the eye while catching the attention of the people who should be seeing the newsletter, mainly operators of the various systems. Please see that this newsletter gets to the people who use the SMARTS Broadcast Systems' products.

"All good things must come to an end." This quote partially applies to one of our programs. Our Music Master music-scheduling program has been around for quite some time and is now being replaced by our vastly superior Digital Program Director. In the past, we have upgraded clients from Music Master to DPD at no charge. We will continue to do that. At this time we are letting it be known that we will no longer support Music Master after December 2001. For those stations presently using our Music Master, this gives you the better part of the year to acquire a Windows-based computer and upgrade to Digital Program Director before we discontinue support of Music Master. Feel free to contact your salesman for details on the computer requirements for DPD. The toll-free number for the Sales Department is 1-800-498-0487.

"The sky is falling, the sky is falling." We have all heard the story about Chicken Little. A little brain damage, and he thinks the world is coming to an end. In our case, it might be ending for some people. After March 1st, the C5 satellite will be coming down. If your satellite network is provided by this satellite, you should already have some paperwork explaining the alternatives. Please don't get caught short. Check into your alternatives ahead of time. Don't let a minor inconvenience become a major catastrophy.

We are re-vamping the Segmented Record section of Unattended Record and need to conduct an informal poll. If you would do us a small favor, we can return the favor in a big way. Here is what we need. If you are getting a network feed that could use segmented recording, would you fax us the network format clock along with a cover sheet that includes your call letters. The kinds of programs that we are thinking of are: Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Dean Adell, Dr. Laura, G. Gordon Liddy, Michael Reagan, etc. The new Unattended Record will include templates for these programs, so the more programs we have, the easier it will be for you to set up your recordings. Please fax your information to 1-800-398-8309. Our return favor will be a template for each of these programs, greatly easing the burden when it comes to scheduling these recordings.

We have come to realize that there are many stations that do not Defrag on a regular basis. The common excuse we hear is, "We're 24/7, we don't have time to take the station off the air to Defrag." Now you don't have to. If you are using our NT Server on the SMARTCASTER network, you can Defrag on the fly. The stations stay on the air, and the audio files may be optimized at the same time. Contact the Support Department to answer any questions you may have about the procedure. If you don't have an NT Server in your network, contact the Sales Department at 1-800-498-0487 for further information.

February is always my month to remind you of viruses. I warn you now so that you have time to do a virus scan before March 6th, Michaelangelo's birthday and the day that virus activates. Due to the increasing number of viruses, it doesn't hurt to do a virus check on a regular basis. Another way to restrict access of viruses to your SMARTCASTER equipment is to remind your staff that it is a broadcast tool that just happens to be a computer and that they
