Issue 69 Smarts Broadcast Systems May 2000
Doug Burton

Hello,
School is just about over for another year. People are enjoying the great outdoors. Summer is just around the corner. Enjoy the warm weather while you have the chance.

SCHOOL

While school is just about over for another year for those in the traditional educational system, it is just getting started for us. SMARTS will hold classes May 17th, 18th, and 19th. The classes for SMARTCASTER operators will cover each facet of SMARTCASTER operation, plus troubleshooting and a viewing of the features that may be added to the system. The cost is $150 per individual. Each student is responsible for their own meals and lodging. Call the office today to get signed up.

BE PREPARED

Change is a fact of life. People move on. Make sure that more than one person knows what is going on with your SMARTCASTER. Sure, one person is responsible for the changes and overall running of the unit, but someone else should be able to step in when needed. That person also needs to know how to set it up, how to make changes, where “stuff” is, and why you do it the way you do it. I can tell you stories of operators who have moved on to other stations, of others who have died, and when they left, they took all of that information with them. That leaves the station high and dry, and scrambling to recover lost information. Insist that a second person be trained on the SMARTCASTER. This is especially pertinent if the current operator has already given notice. The time it takes to train someone for this position will save you lots of trouble later.

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS

We often send a fax to stations detailing the work they need to do. For some, this has worked very well. For others, it has been the beginning of their headaches. When we give step by step instructions, each of the steps has to be followed in order to achieve success. Skipping any of the steps, especially the first one, can result in

disaster. Hence the headaches of some stations. If you receive faxed instructions from us, yet have a question or problems while following those instructions, call the Support Line for clarification or help. So remember, follow the instructions; all of them!

NAB

We had a good showing in Las Vegas this past month and were able to see many of you in person. Still, there were many who were not able to visit us and see the latest wares. I am continually amazed at the innovative technology we use in radio stations. If it has been a while since you talked with one of our Sales Department, you should call today to see what we have to offer. Our early units were able to take closures from a satellite network and play commercials. We have improved a great deal since then. Our recent systems allow several stations in one building to use the same commercial inventory, air the time and temperature, store and air the music library for several formats, plus interface the live announcer or one from a remote site. And we top that off by connecting stations in different cities via the Internet and running much of the operation from a central location. Don’t make the mistake of thinking we are the same unit you saw several years ago. We have what it takes to make your station grow. Contact the Sales Department for further information.

WEBSITE We have also beefed up the Website. You may check us out at www.smartsbroadcast.com to see what I mean. We show the entire product line, and if you add a /support to the Website address you will see the frequently asked questions and get answers to some of the common problems. Take a look and see if you don’t find something beneficial to your station.
