SMARTCASTER NEWS
Issue 54 SMARTS Broadcast Systems February 1999
Greetings.
Ah, February. The month of St. Valentine, and several presidents' birthdays. A time to share warm thoughts and feelings with someone you love.

MAKE NOTES
Were you aware that every phone call we make is logged? That way we have a record of previous conversations. Should you call today and say that we helped you with a problem six months ago, but you can't remember what we did, we can check the log and go through the fix again. You, too, should log your calls. If you were to log each call you would have a written reference regarding the work that was done.

KB/LK
Here's a reminder to not be in too big a hurry. Oh sure, you've got dead air and you are racing to get back on the air. So pay attention to what you are doing. For those of you with the rack mounted (black) SMARTCASTERS, be careful when going for the Reset button. That button is perilously close to the KB/LK. Ever flick some mysterious switch while wondering what it does? Later you find out that it was something important? Oops! The KB in KB/LK stands for KeyBoard and the LK stands for Lock. Flick that switch and your keyboard no longer works! It won't reset your computer, but it will make life interesting when you try to do ANYTHING with the SMARTCASTER. By the way, the Reset button is the square red one.

THE MOODY BLUES
For those of you who are on the Moody network, you should be aware that Moody has recently made some very aggressive changes. They have added several clocks to their format. We have done extensive work in regard to this change and have that information archived if you need it. Feel free to contact us.

OPTIMIZING
I haven't promoted Optimizing or Defragging lately. There are still some who do not Defrag on a regular basis. This procedure keeps your audio files from being fragmented on the hard drive. Fragmentation causes the unit to slow down which means choppy audio for the listener. This is especially important if you delete and record a lot of commercials each week. If you need help getting back into the swing of things, contact the Support Department.

BACKUP
I know I have talked about this recently. It is still important. Backup your information now and then. This will save you having to put it in by hand. To restore it from a disk is so much simpler than having to put it all back in by hand one at a time. It's a couple of minutes compared to a couple of hours. Think about it.

VIRUS CHECK
Here is my annual reminder to do a virus check. Next month is the birthday of Michelangelo. While he was a great artist and his work is a thing to behold, the virus named after him is a vile thing that will cause you to say things that will turn the air blue. The virus activates on March 6th, his birthday. Be sure to do the test well before that date. If the virus should be activated, your SMARTCASTER will be in a world of hurt. Save yourself the trouble and do a virus scan before hand. If you find something, take the time to kill it!

NEW TOYS
How would you like to announce the time during your unattended periods? We can do it. How would you like to announce the temperature during an unattended period? We can do it. How would you like to see more than ten items in a break while live? We can do it. How would you like to use the phone to call in from the ballgame? We can do it. How would you like to use the phone to call in and record? We can do it. How would you like to tie several stations together in one building? We can do it. How would you like to tie several stations together anywhere in the world? You guessed it, we can do it. Are you interested? Contact the Sales Department at SMARTS. Call 1-800-498-0487.
